London is a safe city
Is London really a safe place to live?
Well, a new way of measuring crime has been introduced by Cananda which show London is a relatively safe city. The violent crime severity index released by Statistics Canada yesterday gives London a rating of 78.5, below the national average of 94.6 and that of several other cities of similar size.
Rather than looking at the number of crimes commited the index rates crimes depending on the severity of them given those which aren’t as severe a lower ranking to those which are higher. This gives a clearer idea of the types of crimes which go on in a society giving it a true reflection.
The new ranking contains two sets of statistics — the overall crime severity index and the violent crime severity index. However, it is said crime severity indexes won’t necessarily give the complete picture, either. This is because the severity index is based on court sentences, a province with tougher judges may appear to have more severe crime and that may be why Canada’s western provinces have higher rates.
My question is how is it safe though? Just because a new way of measuring crime has been discovered saying London is actually quite safe it doesn’t mean it is. The crime will still be as high as it was before because nothing will have changed in actual terms of crime.
Re-birth of estate to kill current crime
A notorios ‘sink’ estate is to get a £1billion makeover in the biggest development in London since the Olympic park. The Ferier estate in Kidbrooke is said to be demolished and been replaced by 400 new homes which has been given planning permission by Greenwich council. But is a re-birth really going to stop the crime that goes on there?
I mean last year members of a gang who styled themselves the Ferrier Boyz stabbed a young man who confronted them after they robbed his 14-year-old brother. Unemployment among its residents has been as high as 75 per cent. The estate is plagued by crime and violence. So how will new housing change the residents of this estate, just because it has a new look, doesn’t mean what’s ont the inside will change.
Ian Tomlinson dies due to internal bleeding
The death of Ian Tomlinson is said to be due to internal bleeding rather than the natural cause of a heart attack like many thought after a witness releases new footage.
Tomlinson was hit violently by a police officer during the G20 Summit, however many people believed this was due to heart attack but during a second postmortem it was discovered Mr Tomlinson died due to a abdominal haemorrhage. It is said that if this had not occured the death may have been ignored and believed it was due to natural causes. But would this have been right, surely the man deserved justice? It is worrying enough thinking about violent crime which goes on around you, but when this is reflected in police officer it does become quite worrying to think who is meant to be protecting us from crime. Are they protecting or inflicting!

Gang throw bricks at tube
On Wednesday 22nd April gangs were caught throwing bricks at tubes that passed by in West London. The central line had severe delays on the wednesday night due to several trains suffering from smashed windows where stone and bricks were been launched at the tube resulting in many trains been taken out of service. The gang were acting in the Acton area, luckily not injurying any passengers or drivers which were travelling at this time.

Seriously, what goes through people’s minds when they carrier out these sorts of actions, do they not consider the consequences? Passengers could have been seriously hurt, even by a tiny stone if it was thrown with force, and judging how they managed to smash windows i pretty sure it was.
This is not the first time the central line has been targeted, due to this the British Transpor Police (BTP) are investigating the “reckless vandalism” to find any links.
Crime rising as recession bites
People are now be warned by a national campaign the dangers of burgulars at this current financially difficult time. History has shown that in times of recession crime figures do increase, in particular theft. The Government have created a £1.6m burgulary campaign which will aim to provide the public with ways to protect their homes from being targeted.
It is said those homes with unlocked doors and windows have a higher 30% chance of their homes been burgled and homes are more risk at night.
People are being warned that although burgulary figures have been dropped by 60% since 1995, opportunist burglars may take advantage of the homes with a lack of security system. People should now be taking exxtra care to protect their homes, so remember to lock those doors and windows.
Knife Crime Falls
It has been reported that in October to December 2008 knife crimes fell by 12%, however an increase in muggings rose by 25%. The British Crime Survey showed that overall recorded crime had fell by 4% in comparison with 2007. On the other hand although their has been a general decrease in crime statistics it still showed in some cases crime rose. It was shown that violent crimes dropped by 6% where as vandalism rose by 5%. But what does this mean? It is clearly showing there is not a fall in all crimes with muggings been raised by a staggering quarter howevr it is showing more violent crimes are lower. Could this be the cause of young gangs? It shows vandalism has rose which is a large crime gangs tend to commit and they are more likely to commit muggings then to invade someones home and rob them. Is this the way are crime is now going to be?
Officer critically ill in hospital after sustaining head injuries on duty in London
A man suffered serious head injuries after chasing burgler suspect whilst on duty and ended up been in a critical stare. As part of a member of the Met police’s CO19 firearms unit, he was out doing his job on Saturday 11th April, but backfired when he ended up in hospital. Two of his collegues also suffered minor injuries, but the person in crime is still said to be out on the streets.
The criminal not only commited the burglerly, they than ran away and caused a police officer serious harm. The police put their lives at risk everyday and this is what they get in return. Even though no stab or shot wounds have been found, police are investigating to what casued such serious head injuries. Do people have no respect nowadays and will go to such extremes as to risking someone’s life to commit petty crimes, which shouldn’t even be an issue to begin with.
What is wrong with this world.
Man assaulted on underground
A man was on the train on London’s underground Waterloo line when he was suddenly assaulted by another passenger. The 23 year old was travelling on the train when he was asked to move out the way so his assaulter could see the tube map. He was then punched in the face for no reason, by a man who has still not been identifie
d.
The assaulter had no reason to have punched the victim which personally i think is pathetic. The man was not provoked and there was certainly no need for the punch, which was totally uneccessary.A point obviously needs to be made to people that this type of behavious is not acceptable.
Is this are world which we now live where crime is just accepted? I mean this incident took place during the day where plenty of people will have been travelling, do people just not care these days. Not only that but it also sets a bad example to those who are younger and naive making it seem as if violence is acceptable. Something needs to be done.
Theft of jewelry from London homes increases in ’09: police
Robbery is a frequent crime not only in London, but around the rest of the UK too, but what is highly suspicious is the fact that now 33 homes, those which have been reported, have been nroken into during the night and the only thing that has been taken is expensive jewellery. This theft of jewelery has increased over the years and has become significantly high in figures.
A man has been described but there has still been no further evidence which leads to those commiting the crimes. It is horrible to think that you cant even have a peaceful nights sleep anymore because you’re frightened of someone breaking an entry into their homes. What happened to been safe once your inside the house? Are we no longer safe no matter where we are?
It has been argued- is it because the home owners are leaving their property unsecure, but should people really have to be on the watch 24/7 beacuse people in this world can no longer be trusted. People are been warned to keep an eye on their homes if there are any suspicious characters around, do we really have to live in a world where everything will need CCTV because its the only way we will be protected?
London man finds strangers in home
Now it’s one thing to come home and the tea not be on the table or to come home to a mess but to come home to a group of youths trespassing and robbing your belongings is another things entirely. A man rang police around 1am after he’d got home to be ‘welcomed’ by a group of teenagers trespassing on his property and stealing his belongings. When the police was called they fled the scene so far two of them have been idenified but more have thought to be involved.
Now how much more of this do we have to take. What ever happended to the phrase ‘home sweet home’ . The one place you are meant to feel the safest of them all is home, but with incidents like this people are no longer feeling safe no matter where they are. Crime just seems to be everywhere around us. Are people not brought up to respects peoples’ property anymore and do they not have anything better to do with their time.
